Postgraduate Diploma in Neonatal Nursing

The Postgraduate Diploma in Neonatal Nursing is a on and a half year  academic-year program designed to equip learners with advanced knowledge, clinical competence, and practical skills in the care of newborns, particularly those who are premature, low birth weight, critically ill, or require specialized neonatal support. The program focuses on promoting newborn survival, preventing complications, supporting healthy growth and development, and delivering safe, evidence-based, family-centred neonatal care.

Learners develop advanced skills in newborn assessment, neonatal resuscitation, thermoregulation, feeding support, infection prevention and control, medication administration, oxygen therapy, monitoring of high-risk newborns, and the management of common neonatal conditions. Particular emphasis is placed on the recognition and early management of neonatal emergencies, including respiratory distress, sepsis, birth asphyxia, hypoglycaemia, jaundice, prematurity, and other complications that contribute significantly to neonatal morbidity and mortality.

The program integrates theoretical learning with supervised clinical practice in neonatal care settings, enabling learners to apply their knowledge in real clinical situations. Through clinical placements and practicum experiences, learners strengthen their ability to provide comprehensive care in neonatal units, newborn care areas, maternity settings, and other healthcare environments where specialized newborn care is required.

The program also emphasizes evidence-based practice, compassionate and respectful care, effective communication with parents and families, multidisciplinary teamwork, infection prevention, patient safety, clinical decision-making, and continuity of care. Learners are prepared to support parents during hospitalization, provide appropriate health education, promote breastfeeding and Kangaroo Mother Care, and contribute to improved neonatal outcomes.

By the end of the program, graduates are expected to demonstrate advanced competence in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating neonatal nursing care. They are also prepared to contribute to quality improvement, clinical leadership, staff mentorship, neonatal health education, and the strengthening of newborn care services within hospitals and other healthcare facilities.
